Under the government’s decentralisation plan for the migration program, aimed at easing population pressure in the major cities, permanent residency will be more likely for people who are willing to live and work in regional Australia.

Government to fast-track 5000 visas to attract global tech talent

According to the Australian Financial Review, the Immigration Minister will unveil the Government's new Global Talent Independent Program tonight, with the aim of fast-tracking 5000 visas per year to promote hi-tech industries in Australia. 

This high-skilled migration stream will be included in the annual 70,000 cap for skilled migrants.

The Department of Home Affairs is sending officials overseas to begin actively recruiting people with advanced degrees and experience in specific industries, such as agricultural technology and quantum computing,

The Government is seeking expert advice on which 5 or 6 industries to target in their first-ever sustained recruiting program of overseas skilled migrants.

State timeframes for 489 visa closure

State governments have announced their timeframes in relation to the subclass 489 visa closure on 15 November 2019.

Today is the last day of the EOI invitation round for Western Australia’s regional state nomination before the new program commences in November.

Victoria’s Skilled & Business Migration Program (SBMP) will not accept further 489 nomination applications after 5 September 2019.

If you are waiting for an invitation to apply for a 489 visa and haven’t received one, then I suggest that you seek professional advice on the next step.

Melbourne highly-ranked for international students

According to QS World University Rankings 2020, we live in one of the most attractive cities for international students to come to study abroad. 

Melbourne is ranked at number 3 behind Tokyo and London, which kept its top spot for the second year in a row. The rankings take into account various factors such as safety, affordability, employer activity and teaching quality.

It seems obvious that anyone considering studying in Australia should start looking for a school in Melbourne!

Potential processing times for new parent visa

Good news! This article might be a good indicator of the current processing time for the newly introduced sponsored parent (temporary) visa (subclass 870).

This family had their visa granted just 10 days after lodgement of the application. 
​

Please note that currently the Department of Home Affairs do not provide a processing timeframe for this visa on their website.

Work and Holiday visa

Are you interested in working in Australia, but do not have an Australian employer or skills in demand?

The 12 month Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) might be a solution for you to test the waters in the Australian labour market.

If you are:
  • under 30 years old
  • have functional English. and
  • have studied or are studying towards a tertiary qualification,

you would meet the minimum requirements for this visa.
 
Please click HERE to check whether your country of passport is specified on the eligible country list.

Also, the government is planning to expand this program to further countries, including India and the Philippines. The relevant news article can be found HERE.

The Work and Holiday visa may be extended to a second and even third period of stay if certain requirements are met.
